I have known the Longman name for at least 11 years. I always liked their dictionaries for friendly selected words, and easy to grasp explanations. As a person for whom English is a second language, I was more than happy to see the longman brand on my I-pod. I use the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English which is acceptable, The Phrasal Verbs Dictionary (below my expectations), and recently I bought the Activator Thesaurus. In my opinion, we are witnesses of very interesting moment in the life of Longman Company. A well-recognized bame in the world of international students as a trastworthy name, Longman changes its approach to market completly. Now they have gone on the path of greed where they exchange their good name for $16. The Longman Activator Thesaurus is not ready to enter the market. It is better to download one of the many free thesauruses, which are accessible from Apple Store. Let me explain how Longman Activator works. Lets say that you are looking for explanation of the word: bear. You search b_e_a_r and you receive 23 suggestions. For example bear--carry1, bear --stand5, bear --support7, bear --stand5. You are cleaver person so, you think that if you tap bear --carry1 you will be transferred to the explanation carry 1. This doesnt work this way. It does no metter which of the 23 examples you tap, nathing help you. So, you think you must return to beginning and serach for carry1 insted of desired bear. Now, you are in section with CARRY with 16 examples. One of the carries is all capital letters. You tap it and receive 4 explanation: to carry something, carry a lot things, to regular carry, designed to be carry. Now you are little closer. You tap first from the list o carries (bear --carry1) and you have explanation of one usage of the world bear. If you do all 23 examples you will know a liitle more about dthw world bear. Perhaps, now you think, why didnt reach the world the section -keywords- which is part of the activator. There are two odd things about "keywords" and "index". Both (keywords and index all core information - thousands o definitios) simple are not accessible from keyboard of activator. You cannot type the word letter by letter. You need to scroll the entire list of hundreds of deinitions. And this is very sad fact about company Longman. Why? Because I never maet a beautiful, nice, witty girl whou would sell her good name for 16 bucks and change as Longman does. I strongly do not recommend the Longman Activator. This situation raises an important ethical question for Apple Store: can apple charge a profit from a awindle, such as a Longman Activator?
Contents are really nice. But histoty, favorite, and selecting in sections do not work. Im using iPod touch 4G with iOS 5.1.1
Just needs to add large font tab on its setting
After using the longman advanced dictionary for a while, I decided to give the thesaurus a try, only to become utterly dissapointed. It lacks even intermediate words like prudent, bellicose, apropos, liaison, .... basically every word that you need a dictionary to look up, as a non-native speaker! Good thing I got it on sale, still 12 bucks down the drain it goes...
Please fix it as soon as possible! Thanks !
